Jacob Markstrom Has Extension Offer on the Table From Devils

Jacob Markstrom completed his first season with the New Jersey Devils last year, and as expected, was a big upgrade between the pipes for the team. The 15-year veteran goaltender posted a 26-16-6 mark with a 2.50 goals against average and a .900 save percentage in 49 starts. He was also stellar in the playoffs with a .911 Sv% and 2.78 GAA.

He's entering the final season of a six-year deal with a $6 million AAV (New Jersey is responsible for $4.125 million of that), and the Devils are looking to keep him in town past this season. Insider Kevin Weekes reports that they have an extension offer on the table for Markstrom in the $5 million per year range. The term is unknown at this point, though the veteran goalie will be turning 36 during the season.

Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has been saying all offseason that he wants to get Markstrom locked up, and it sounds like he's narrowed in on the price point he'd like to go with.

They also secured the other part of their tandem between the pipes, Jake Allen, on a five-year deal back on July 1. Allen's cap hit is a compact $1.8 million, and takes him through to his age-39 season.

Between the two of them, the Devils finished 5th in the NHL last season in goals against per game, at 2.68, tied for 9th in Sv% at .905, and tied for 3rd in shutouts, with nine.

“When you have two veterans like that, it might be a luxury, but they give us a chance every night, and that’s all we’re trying to ask out of our goaltenders, is just give us a chance,” Tom Fitzgerald said.

Markstrom was acquired by the Devils in a trade with the Calgary Flames early in the summer of 2024 for a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and defenseman Kevin Bahl. New Jersey has obviously been thrilled with the trade thus far.
