Jets lose stud defender for weeks
Samberg, 26, had been coming off a breakout year in Winnipeg.
He logged career highs across the board last season, scoring six goals and 20 points while averaging over 21 minutes of ice time per night. His steady two-way play and plus-34 rating made him one of the Jets’ most improved players, and he was rewarded this summer with a three-year contract extension worth $5.75 million annually.
Losing him just before Opening Night is a significant setback for the Jets’ defensive corps.

With Samberg sidelined until mid-November, the Jets will turn to their depth to fill the gap alongside Neal Pionk.
Candidates include Logan Stanley, Ville Heinola, Haydn Fleury, and Kale Clague, all of whom will get extended opportunities to prove they belong in a top-four role.
