NHL Trade Rumors: New Jersey Devils rejecting trade offers

New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald rejected several trade offers throughout the offseason regarding goaltender Jacob Markstrom.

The Devils are looking to have a bounce-back season and it all starts in goal. Jake Allen and Markstrom are once again the tandem the team will try to ride into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as the veteran netminders are expected to once again split the load this season. While Allen is under a brand new five-year contract at just $1.8 million AAV, Markstrom is a pending unrestricted free agent, but don't expect to see anything but a contract extension coming.

The 35-year-old Markstrom and Fitzgerald are in talks to sign a multi-year contract, as the Devils are banking on a couple of veterans, while some folks are wondering if they need to get younger in net. Outside of New Jersey, teams were trying hard to pry the Swedish goaltender away from the Devils, including the Edmonton Oilers, who reportedly made a decent offer to New Jersey this offseason.

New Jersey also has Nico Daws waiting in the wings, as the Devils' top goaltending prospect is likely to see some spot duty this season, and could throw a wrench into the team's plans with their two vets moving forward. They had Akira Schmid also in the mix, but moved him to Vegas ahead of last season.

Keep an eye on the Devils as they have been linked to trading for Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks, and should they struggle this season, there's also the chance head coach Sheldon Keefe gets canned. In net, expect to see Allen and Markstrom for the foreseeable future as a new deal could be announced ahead of the regular season.
