3 Potential Trade Destinations For Senators' Formenton

Alex Formenton, Ottawa Senators
Alex Formenton's return to the NHL seems imminent, but not with the Ottawa Senators, who still have his rights. On Insider Trading, Darren Dreger reported that, "Staios has given Formenton's agent, Darren Ferris, the permission to speak with other NHL clubs about the possibility of having his rights traded. Nothing imminent, but Formenton would like to come back."

Formenton hasn't played in the NHL since 2021-22, when he scored 18 goals and 32 points in 79 games, but has been in the National League playing in three of the past four seasons, missing all of last season. He has two goals and four points in 11 games this season in the NL. If he returns, there are some teams that could be fit to give him a shot.

New York Rangers

The New York Rangers have really struggled to score this season and haven't been able to put a puck in the back of the net at home through three games. They have scored on the road, but the lineup looks weaker than it should, especially with Vincent Trocheck out with an injury. Formenton, on a cheap deal, would at least give the team looking to get back to the playoffs and score more goals another body in the mix.

Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres also need to pick up the scoring and have a very weak fourth line with the three players combining for no points in 12 games. This trio consists of Tyson Kozak, Mason Geertson, and Beck Malenstyn with Justin Danforth (4 games played) and Joshua Dunne (1 GP) also contributing no points this season. They are all hardly playing and the Sabres must have a competitive season. Adding someone like Formenton, even if it's just to boost the bottom-6 better than it is right now, is worth it.

Nashville Predators

The Nashville Predators have started the season better than last and there is at least a bit of hope. Some more youth have been mixed into the lineup, but there are still weak points in the forward group. Tyson Jost and Fedor Svechkov have no points through six games. Brady Martin, who started as the top line center, has played two games and is in the press box, and Cole Smith, someone who shouldn't be an everyday player, has a goal through six games. There is plenty of room to add Formenton into the mix as the Predators desperately try to salvage the big moves they made in the 2024 offseason.
