3 Teams Who Could Trade A Goaltender This Season
The 2025-26 NHL season is upon us as a tripleheader leads us all off on Tuesday. It's been an interesting preseason around the league, as rosters are starting to take shape, and there's going to be some tough decisions to make for general managers over the course of the next few days.
In net, expect to see a few goaltenders change teams this season, as this could be a year where the goalie market is as hot as it's been in many moons. There's several teams who are considering refreshing their crease, and with a few teams with lofty expectations, if things don't go as planned, a deal could materialize quickly.
Here's three goaltenders to watch on the 2025-26 trade market:
Tristan Jarry, Pittsburgh Penguins
Kyle Dubas is going to have to retain some salary here, but expect to see Tristan Jarry moved at some point this season. Throughout training camp he's been outplayed by youngster Sergei Murashov, and with Arturs Silovs also in the mix now, the Penguins can move on from Jarry. The only issue is the fact his game hasn't been the same the past couple of seasons, and he'll need to play better to raise his trade stock. Jarry has three years total left on his contract at $5.3 million AAV, and owns a 12-team no-trade clause. The Edmonton Oilers remain to be linked to Jarry's services.
Cal Pickard, Edmonton Oilers
Speaking of the Oilers, they added Connor Ingram for some insurance, and after a year where goaltender was their weakest portion of their game, Stan Bowman sat on his hands, and didn't do anything to address it. If a goalie trade is made this year in Edmonton, expect Pickard to be going the other way, as the team seems to be more loyal to Stuart Skinner at this point. Both goalies are pending unrestricted free agents, so something's got to give, and it could be a mid-season goalie swap coming in Oil country.
Jacob Fowler or Jakub Dobes, Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens are hoping to take a huge step forward this season, and they have the team to do it. In net, Sam Montembeault will be carrying the load and if the Canadiens make a big splash on the trade market this season to land a long-term number-two centre, teams are going to ask for one of Fowler or Dobes. The Habs have the best farm system in the league and their two goaltending prospects are two of the very best in the league, especially Fowler who is just 20 years old. Big things ahead in Montreal, and it could involve a goalie trade this season.
