When it was announced that the Capitals placed Iorio on waivers, it certainly seemed possible that another club would scoop him up. After all, he is a 22-year-old right-shot defenseman who is 6-foot-4, so he is both young and has size. Thus, it is not particularly surprising to see a rebuilding team like the Sharks take a chance on him with this waiver claim.
Iorio has played in nine NHL games over the last two seasons with the Capitals, where he recorded one assist, two takeaways, five hits, six blocks, and a plus-1 rating. During this past season in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Hershey Bears, the 2021 second-round pick recorded five goals, 15 assists, 20 points, 27 penalty minutes, and a minus-4 rating. He also had two assists and six penalty minutes in eight playoff games for Hershey in 2025.
The Sharks claiming Iorio also comes after the Pacific Division club placed fellow right-shot defenseman Timothy Liljegren on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury.
