Insider Says Hurricanes Could Make Another Move For Goaltender

Pyotr Kochetkov, Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes have a problem in net, and it has once again come from health. Pyotr Kochetkov has started the season with a lower-body injury and hasn't played. The Hurricanes have Frederik Andersen, but he is prone to injury and misses time each season. The team claimed Brandon Bussi, and he almost got a shutout in his first NHL game. But while he could be an option, Carolina has their sights set on the Stanley Cup and aren't that comfortable with a rookie (one game of experience) being a fallback option.

Frank Seravalli said, "I think they're a team that watches the waiver wire very closely when it comes to goalies and I wouldn't be surprised to see them go out and try to make something happen." This statement comes after the Hurricanes already claimed Bussi off of waivers from the Florida Panthers on October 5.

There were reports that the Hurricanes were targeting Carter Hart, but it is very likely now that the Vegas Golden Knights are going to land the former Philadelphia Flyers' starter.

The goalie Carolina may choose to bring in could be a rental or someone with term. Andersen is on a one-year deal and is 36 years old. The injury issues have impacted his game in recent years as well. Kochetkov has one more year left after this one and he should remain at least a 1b option in Carolina for the time being, but the feeling is that the Hurricanes are a clear starter away from breaking through to the Stanley Cup Final.

They have the cap space and assets to pull off a big move. Maybe it's someone like Ilya Sorokin, who has struggled mightily for the New York Islanders through three starts. There have been good goalie options go through waivers already, like Nico Daws, Michael DiPietro, and Clay Stevenson, but more proven goalies should become available for the right price soon enough.
