Zibanejad Has Interesting Statement On Rangers' Start To Season

Mika Zibanejad, New York Rangers
The New York Rangers set an NHL record to start the season, and not in a good way. They are the first team in NHL history to be shut out in their first three home games of the season. They have been getting the chances, but just not finishing at home.

Mika Zibanejad was asked about it and said, "I don't know if I should laugh or cry." That's a pretty strong statement considering he's probably just in shock at the horrible beginning to a new season, where the group had hope after what happened last season.

Zibanejad, in particular, had a rough 2024-25 season, but the rest of the time as a New York Ranger has been very good. He even got Selke Trophy votes in four of the five seasons before last. He, along with the majority of the Rangers, has barely been able to find the scoresheet as the veteran has just one goal through five games.

The Rangers' forward depth, which costs the team less than $7 million this season, isn't the problem as it was initially expected to be. Rather, the bottom-6 has 10 points and the top-6 has 10 points too. It is up to the scorers and the players who are paid to produce offensively to take charge and turn the ship around for the Rangers. Adam Fox and J.T. Miller seem to be the ones leading the team, but compared to expectations, Miller is still below where he should be.

Through five games, the Rangers are 2-3-0 with 10 goals and seven against. Igor Shesterkin has done everything he can with a 0.76 GAA and .972 SV% in four starts, but just a bit of help can make a world of difference right now. The Rangers are good enough to get back in the playoffs this season, especially with the additions over the past year. It's a matter of figuring it out quickly.
