NHL Rumors: Pete DeBoer Being Linked To One Team As Their Next Head Coach

Dallas Stars Head Coach Pete DeBoer looks on during 2025 game.

Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman told SiriusXM NHL Network Radio the Buffalo Sabres have at minimum discussed their options internally, and Pete DeBoer is part of that chatter.

The Buffalo Sabres are six games in (2-4) and already facing hard questions. Friedman noted the organization has set up easy internal moves on the management side, which adds to the sense that changes could come if results do not turn.

He also pointed out how ownership influence helped bring back Lindy Ruff and that any coaching move would have to account for that commitment.

Track record that tempts teams

Friedman highlighted why DeBoer draws interest.

The Dallas Stars reached the Western Conference Final three straight years on his watch, and he has guided multiple teams to the Stanley Cup Final. His first seasons tend to spike performance, which is exactly the jolt a young core in Buffalo might seek if the current path stalls.

None of this guarantees a switch, but with Buffalo’s expectations, a ready-made internal front office contingency, and DeBoer’s immediate-impact history, the possibility is alive.
