NHL Rumors: Devils Planning Big Move With Jacob Markstrom

New Jersey Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom reacts before 2025 game.

The New Jersey Devils are pushing to keep Jacob Markstrom beyond this season, and both sides sound on the same page.

President and general manager Tom Fitzgerald said the club “wants Jacob and Amanda Markstrom to be part of our family moving forward,” adding that conversations with his agent have been “real healthy.” The Jacob Markstrom extension is tracking as a multi-year deal after initial dialogue in the ~$5 million AAV range, with the gap believed to be on dollars and/or term.

Markstrom, 35 now and turning 36 during the deal, is week-to-week with a lower-body injury but has resumed skating. Fitzgerald acknowledged the club must balance age-related rules and downside protection with rewarding a starter who went 26-16-6 with a 2.50 GAA and four shutouts last season.

Fitzgerald’s goal is continuity. Jake Allen is already signed on a unique five-year, $1.8 million-per-season pact, giving the Devils a cost-controlled tandem if they can land Markstrom at a manageable number.

Structure will likely have bonuses and protection in the early years, plus flexibility on the back end as the team navigates extensions elsewhere.

Talks paused to let Markstrom's recent injury “breathe,” but both parties intend to circle back soon.
