3 Potential Trade Destinations for Sharks' Alexander Wennberg

The San Jose Sharks are going to be an interesting team to follow this season on the trade market, as they have a boatload of pending free agents, and will have to make some decisions on whether they're going to shoot for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, or try and sell off their assets.

The Sharks are exceeding expectations this season, but they should still be building for the future. One forward they should be moving is Alexander Wennberg. The center trade market is slim this season so the Sharks could cash in on Wennberg's value and land a solid prospect, or perhaps a second-round pick.

The Athletic's Chris Johnston commented on Wennberg talks recently, ranking him 16th on his trade board:

A second-line center in San Jose, Wennberg profiles as an all-situations player best suited for a role lower in the lineup with a deeper team. He’s a pending unrestricted free agent who has been through this before — getting traded from the Kraken to the Rangers before the 2024 deadline — and carries value because he can be trusted across 200 feet of ice. Wennberg is more of a playmaker than a shooter, although his offensive impacts are somewhat limited.

Here's three teams who will be in the mix for the two-way centerman:

Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens are slowed down recently, but fully expect them to be in the playoff hunt this season. They have a huge hole down the middle of the ice and Wennberg fits the bill for the style of pivot they're looking for. Montreal tried really hard to sign David Kampf, once the Toronto Maple Leafs waived him, and Wennberg has way more offensive upside. They'll be calling the Sharks, there's no doubt about it.

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks have been hit with some bad luck this season, as they're down multiple forwards to injury. They are in the market to make changes, and could see the Sharks as a perfect trade partner to use some of their draft capital. Wennberg could be a candidate to re-sign in Vancouver, so it will be interesting to see how aggressive Patrik Allvin is with San Jose.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes have a ton of cap space, they have a GM who loves making moves, and they have a need for another top-nine forward, and top-four defenceman. Wennberg will certainly be on their radar and it's going to be how high are they willing to go with their offer, and if the Sharks are willing to sell instead of push for the postseason.
