Alexandar Georgiev Has Contract Terminated, Already Makes Next Move

Unable to crack the NHL this season, eight-year NHL veteran goalie Alexandar Georgiev has been placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination by the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

According to insider Elliotte Friedman, the Bulgarian goalkeeper is already headed to Russia to sign with Spartak of the KHL (per Hockey News Hub).

Georgiev, who led the NHL in wins by a goalie for two consecutive seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, in 2022-23 (40 wins) and 2023-24 (38 wins), fell off a cliff last season. The Avs dealt him and his .874 save percentage early in the year to the San Jose Sharks. His performance there wasn't any better, with an .875 save percentage and a 3.88 goals against average.

The Sharks didn't retain him, and he signed a one-year, $825,000 contract with the Buffalo Sabres just before training camp. But he didn't break camp with the NHL club, and wound up playing just two games at Rochester, where he had an .896 Sv% and 3.57 GAA. Those were his first games in the minors in six years.

Georgiev spent his first five seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers.

After eight years in North America, Georgiev leaves with a .903 Sv% and 2.99 GAA in 303 appearances (288 starts).
