NHL Rumors: Capitals Searching Trade Market For Specific Need

Washington Capitals players celebrate goal during 2025 game.

The Washington Capitals are looking for a center after Pierre-Luc Dubois’ injury, and TSN insider Darren Dreger says management will explore the trade market while avoiding costly moves that mortgage the post-Alex Ovechkin future.

In the short term, Washington will try to cover the gap internally, and the coaching staff is ready to try some different combinations while they ride out a tough stretch.

Washington’s plan

Connor McMichael looks set for an extended audition in the second-line center role, a move that lets the Capitals keep picks and prospects while Dubois recovers.

Head coach Spencer Carbery has been clear that one player cannot replace Dubois, so the expectation is committee minutes, more situational faceoffs, and a bigger five-on-five load spread across the middle six.

If McMichael can show he can drive play and the group stabilizes, Washington can keep its assets intact for more pressing needs later.

Trade market options

Dreger notes there is no quick fix, and the market for a true second-line center is thin. Veterans like Nazem Kadri would cost premium assets and cap space, while productive pivots on struggling teams, such as Pavel Zacha, are unlikely to be available early.
