NHL Rumors: Oilers Trying To Find Trade For Defenseman

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Troy Stecher carries the puck during 2025 game.

Troy Stecher trade buzz is picking up as the Edmonton Oilers work the phones to find a soft landing for the veteran defenseman.

With Alec Regula activated and more healthy bodies returning, Edmonton faces a roster squeeze that has pushed Stecher to the fringe. Insiders say the club likes his professionalism and playoff readiness but is exploring a move that gives him minutes while the Oilers open a spot and preserve flexibility.

Why a Troy Stecher trade is on the table

Stecher’s cap hit sits just above the veteran minimum, which limits the benefit of moving him for savings alone. That is why management has also considered higher cap hits if a larger deal develops.

He has delivered steady third-pair minutes and can step into tough games, yet current depth charts suggest he may sit more than he plays.

Possible landing spots and expected return

Clubs that need a reliable depth defender at a low cost make the most sense. A reunion with the Detroit Red Wings is plausible given their periodic back-end needs. Injury-hit defenses like the New Jersey Devils or the Vancouver Canucks could also make calls.

With waivers a factor and the Oilers prioritizing a preferred destination for the player, the return likely settles at a late pick or future considerations. If a bigger cap-clearing trade materializes elsewhere, Edmonton could still keep Stecher as insurance.
