Devils & Blues Emerging as Trade Partners
The NHL's trade market is starting to heat up and two teams worth keeping tabs on include the New Jersey Devils and St. Louis Blues.
The Blues are in sell mode, as they're listening to trade inquiries on just about everyone, and when it comes to the Devils targets, veteran center Brayden Schenn appears to be the perfect Blue to zone in on. Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald is in the market for a two-way center for his third line, as Schenn would complement Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes down the middle in New Jersey.
Recently, Schenn was named a highly ranked trade target on Daily Faceoff's formal trade board, and Matt Larkin had this to say:
Schenn is not a $6.5-million player anymore. The Blues would almost certainly need to retain salary to facilitate a trade, especially since he has a couple years of term left. But Schenn at a discounted price could still boost a team’s third line and bring brawny veteran leadership. My colleague Anthony Di Marco highlights Schenn as a potential target for a team like the New Jersey Devils.
Schenn, 34, has two seasons left on his deal at $6.5 million AAV, and so far this season through 23 games, has scored four times and added four assists, for eight points. Schenn's averaging 16:51 of ice-time per game, and plays both sides of special teams, although he's been used in only spot duty on the PK this season in St. Louis. He's also won 54% of his faceoffs so far this year, which would be a career high win-rate.
The Devils have $3.6 million in cap space to work with at the moment, and have all three of their picks in the first three rounds of the 2026 NHL Draft, plus two fourth-rounders. They also have goaltending prospect Nico Daws, who could interest the Blues, especially if they wind up moving Jordan Binnington to potentially the Edmonton Oilers.
Keep tabs on both the Blues and Devils, as there's been multiple times they've been linked to making a trade together this season, with the most recent talks centered around Schenn heading to New Jersey.
