NHL Rumors: Did Devon Levi Request A Trade From Sabres?

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Devon Levi makes a save during 2024 game.

The Devon Levi trade rumors are back in a big way, and they’re loud.

A report from the “After The Whistle” podcast said the goalie asked to be moved before heading back to the Rochester Americans, and that’s kicked up a ton of chatter. The Buffalo Sabres have a full-blown goalie crowd right now, so the timing tracks.

What we don’t have yet is on-record confirmation from the Sabres or Levi’s camp, which keeps this in rumor territory for the moment. Still, the league knows his name is out there, and teams are poking around.

Did Devon Levi request a trade?

Here’s what we can say without squinting. The podcast hosts (former Sabres' player Craig Rivet and Andrew Peters) claimed Levi requested a trade after he was told he’d be AHL-bound. Follow-ups to the team and his agent didn’t get a response, which isn’t exactly a denial but also isn’t a confirmation.

Meanwhile, Levi’s doing what he can control in Rochester, stopping pucks and keeping numbers tidy, which certainly doesn’t hurt his value. From the Sabres’ side, they’ve been juggling Alex Lyon, Ukko Pekka Luukkonen and Colten Ellis on the NHL roster while also adding Alexandar Georgiev for depth in camp.

That many goalies for two NHL chairs is asking for noise, and this is what noise looks like.

Which teams could call the Sabres?

If this moves from rumor to reality, there are some easy fits.

The Utah Mammoth and Philadelphia Flyers have been linked as clubs that would love another NHL ready option. The Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanes also make sense if they decide their internal depth isn’t enough for the grind.

The big question is price. Levi’s stock isn’t where it was when he first arrived, but he’s 23 with starter traits and team control, so you can see a market forming. If Buffalo prefers to clear the logjam without selling low, they could try moving a different piece, but Levi’s the name everyone asks about for a reason.
