Flyers Rumors: Zegras Could Get Extended Earlier Than Expected
The Philadelphia Flyers have to be extremely pleased with the trade that brought Trevor Zegras to their team. It has paid off in a huge way so far, even if it is just 13 games into the season. He is leading the Flyers by a wide margin with 15 points already, and has four goals to go with that.
Zegras has fit in from the first game and the Flyers are 7-5-1 on the season. To put it into perspective how much this change has helped Zegras, he had six goals and 15 points in 31 games two seasons ago for the Anaheim Ducks, but scored 12 goals and 32 points last season in 57 games.
Lines have been mixed and matched a lot, but Zegras is on the top power play and is in the top-6, however it looks game by game. He is logging back up over 18 minutes per game, the most since his sophomore season when he put up 65 points. He is an offensive player, so it has been rough when he hasn't been able to produce like he and the league know he can.
Elliotte Friedman said, "Trevor Zegras. Philadelphia. Eligible now. Yes, it's only been 13 games, but it looks like a good fit and I can see the Flyers gauging interest in lengthening the relationship."
Zegras is in the third year of a three-year, $5.75 million AAV deal. He has gotten off to a great start in terms of the level of play in order to get a longer-term, bigger money extension with the Flyers. He is an RFA, so the Flyers will have every opportunity to sign him, and can do it anytime they want.
Zegras, being just 24 years old, fits very well into the type of team that the Flyers are trying to build. With Matvei Michkov struggling this season, Zegras has stepped in nicely and been the skill guy that Philadelphia was used to seeing last season.
The Flyers' forward group would look very nice heading into the future with the likes of Michkov, Zegras, Travis Konecny, Bobby Brink, Noah Cates, Tyson Foerster, and prospects like Jett Luchanko, Porter Martone, and Jack Nesbitt. The hope in Philadelphia is that Zegras can keep it up and prove to be a long-term piece worth keeping around.
