Report: Buffalo Sabres Making Trade Offers
The Buffalo Sabres have too many goaltenders, and are trying to make a move to clear out their crowded crease.
According to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman, Alexandar Georgiev is the odd man out, and the Sabres are trying to do whatever they can to find Georgiev a new home:
Buffalo’s goalies. Devon Levi split the net in AHL Rochester early on, but it looks like he’s getting the lion's share of the work now. They are trying to find a new home for Alexandar Georgiev. The Sabres have made it clear Colten Ellis is staying. Someone asked me if Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen could be moved, but I’d be surprised. He’s still their most-experienced and best option, assuming he is healthy.
The Sabres are once again disappointing this season, posting a 5-4-4 record through 13 games. They have Levi waiting for his time to shine, and meanwhile, Georgiev is the veteran of the group, and someone who has shown in the past the capabilities to win 40 games in the NHL.
Georgiev, 29, is signed to a one-year deal at $825,000. He won just seven games last season with the San Jose Sharks, posting a .875 save percentage, however, the Sharks weren't anything to write home about, and often times Georgiev got left out to dry.
The Russian netminder's best season came back in 2022-23 with the Colorado Avalanche, when he won 40 games, and posted a .919 save percentage, which was among the league leaders. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to stay consistent in Denver, and was shipped to the Sharks.
Now, Georgiev was supposed to be given a look with the Sabres, and he's become the backup goaltender on their AHL roster. Life comes at you fast kids.
