Major Medical Update on Logan Cooley After Knee-on-Knee Collision

Utah Mammoth forward Logan Cooley lies on the ice in pain after a knee-on-knee collision

Utah Mammoth star Logan Cooley was forced from their game with the St. Louis Blues Saturday night in the third period, after a knee-on-knee collision with Blues forward Alexey Toropchenko. It looked bad, as most knee-on-knees do. But the initial word from medical tests has the Mammoth breathing a huge sigh of relief.

Initial findings, per insider Frank Seravalli, are that Cooley has a quad contusion—i.e. a bad charley horse—not knee damage. But an MRI later in the day will really tell the tale. More good news in the fact that he was able to walk to the team bus on his own power when leaving the arena.

Toropchenko will not receive supplemental discipline for knee-on-knee with Cooley

Toropchenko was given a 5-minute major for kneeing and a game misconduct. But after reviewing the incident, the NHL's Department of Player Safety (DoPS) has determined that there will be no supplemental discipline, per a number of reports. It was viewed as a natural stopping motion, and that Toropchenko did not lead with or extend his knee as part of the hit.

Cooley is the Mammoth's leading scorer, with 14 goals and 23 points in 26 games, along with a plus/minus of +7, while playing a career-high 18 minutes per night. He's coming off a terrific sophomore season in which he scored 25 goals and notched 65 points.

The former 3rd overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft signed a massive eight-year, $80 million extension ($10M AAV) with the Mammoth earlier this season.
