Maple Leafs Trade Rumors: Toronto Linked to Blue Jackets' Veteran

The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off a much-needed win on Wednesday night, plus the return of first-liners Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies. But that doesn't mean they aren't still desperate to add to their top-six. GM Brad Treliving should be leaving no stone unturned in an attempt to add some scoring to his team.

One name that's emerged this week comes to us from insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, who suggested on Sportsnet 590 The Fan that Columbus Blue Jackets' captain Boone Jenner is a player the Leafs would love to pounce on.

I’m sure there are players that they’d love to target, like a Boone Jenner, for example, in Columbus, their captain, who has that jam, who can put the puck in the net, can play top-six minutes, (he’s hurt right now)… and he’s a UFA this summer.

With their desperate need up the middle, the two-way Jenner would be an ideal addition for the Leafs. He brings both the physical, gritty style that head coach Craig Berube would love, plus the net-front scoring ability that this team could use more of. And with the Leafs' special teams still performing well below expectations, Jenner can be a boon for both the power play and the penalty kill.

Is Boone Jenner a good fit for the Maple Leafs?

This is all assuming he's healthy, of course. Jenner has played over 60 games just once in the previous five seasons. And what assets the Leafs have that the Blue Jackets would be interested in, is also in question. They don't have their own first-round pick until 2028, and trading another one would be an extremely risky proposition after giving up two more of them at last year's deadline.

Meanwhile, are the Blue Jackets ready to sell on Jenner, depending on how contract talks go? "Is this a position where, (they say) 'Ok, we’ll listen, but you’re going to have to overpay a little bit?'," Pagnotta asked. "Toronto doesn’t have a significant amount of assets in the cupboard either. So, it’s a very tricky situation for them to be in.”

Jenner is in the final season of a four-year, $15 million deal with a $3.75M cap hit. There are currently no extension talks taking place, though they are expected to resume during the Olympic Break in February.

He does hold an eight-team no-trade clause, so if a trade becomes a real option, he does have a bit of control. It's unknown whether the Leafs are one of those eight teams.

The Jackets' captain for the past five seasons, Jenner has played his entire 13-year career in Columbus and had 10 points in 16 games before going down a couple of weeks ago after taking a puck to the face. Across 757 career games, he has 202 goals and 393 points, while averaging just about one block and two hits per game.
