NHL Trade Rumors: Oilers Linked To Canucks' Kiefer Sherwood

Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood reacts during 2025 game.

The Edmonton Oilers have been linked to Kiefer Sherwood thanks to Edmonton Journal insider David Staples, who amplified Bob Stauffer’s on-air speculation that Sherwood could be an ideal middle-six target if the Vancouver Canucks cannot extend him.

The appeal is obvious for the Oilers: Sherwood’s contract sits at a tidy $1.5 million AAV, he delivered a career-best 19 goals and 40 points in 2024–25, and he has erupted with nine goals in his first 12 games this season.

Add a heavy forecheck, penalty-killing value, and a top-tier hits rate, and the Kiefer Sherwood Oilers buzz writes itself. Staples stressed it is speculation, not a report, but it is exactly the kind of profile Edmonton needs in its middle six.

Why Sherwood fits Edmonton’s middle six

Stauffer framed Sherwood as a second/third-line solution who brings speed, edge, and relentless pressure. The winger has proven he can score at five-on-five while finishing checks and tilting the ice in tough minutes, the precise blend Edmonton has chased around deadline time.

Represented by Judd Moldaver, Sherwood’s price point and tool kit would draw a line of contenders if he hits the market, and Staples notes that makes him a name to watch as 2026 approaches.

What could block a deal with Vancouver

There are real hurdles. First, the Canucks may simply re-sign him, especially if they stay in the playoff mix with Thatcher Demko healthy.

Second, trading a fan-favorite within the division invites an intradivision premium and PR headache. Third, any package likely starts with meaningful futures, and the Oilers’ draft capital and prospect pool would be tested by a bidding war.

Even so, if the Canucks waver near the deadline and talks stall, Edmonton’s need and Sherwood’s fit keep this link alive.
