Calgary Flames Lock Up Devin Cooley With Multi-Year Extension

Devin Cooley has made quite the impression as backup goalie for the Calgary Flames—both on and off the ice. In 13 appearances (10 starts), he's logged a .914 save percentage and a 2.40 goals against average. The Flames have seen enough to know that they want him around for a while, and have locked Cooley up to a two-year extension worth $2.7 million (AAV of $1.35M).

The 28-year-old has served the team well as the backup to Dustin Wolf.

Cooley spent the entire 2024-25 season in the AHL with the Wranglers, and fared well, with a .905 Sv% and 2.94 GAA. He had a sensational first half of the season, but a serious concussion derailed his progress later in the year.

But his performance this season in the NHL has reached a new level. He took over the backup job after Dan Vladar left for the Philadelphia Flyers during the offseason.

Cooley's only previous NHL experience was in six games with the San Jose Sharks in the 2023-24 season.

The engaging goalie is known as much for his entertaining mindset and his locker room meetings with the media as for his play on the ice. In one recent interview after a game, beaming and all smiles, he said that he keeps himself grounded by saying in his mind during a game, "Nobody cares, nothing matters, we're all gonna die!"
