Insider Names 2 Interesting Blues Players Teams Are Looking At
The St. Louis Blues are on the verge of making some trades to change things up and many valuable players and not-so-tradeable players have been brought up in rumors and reports. Players like Jordan Kyrou, Justin Faulk, Jordan Binnington, and Brayden Schenn are the names you've likely heard many times for many different teams, but this potential shakeup goes deeper than that.
David Pagnotta said, "There are absolutely teams that are kicking tires on...pieces, whether it's a Jordan Binnington, Oskar Sundqvist who's a pending UFA, Mathieu Joseph, another pending UFA, Jordan Kyrou and so on."
That revealed Sundqvist and Joseph as the interesting depth players teams could be looking to acquire, but their value is questionable, more notably, the latter.
Joseph had a career year in 2023-24 with the Ottawa Senators, scoring 11 goals and 35 points in 72 games. Since then and since he joined the St. Louis Blues at the start of last season, he has sunk down pretty far. He has two goals and eight points in 31 games this season and just six goals and 22 points in 91 games as a Blue.
Joseph is playing one minute more per game than he did last season, but it is still in a lower impact role, not the nearly 17 minutes per game he played with Ottawa. The 28-year-old is currently on the fourth line, plays some time on the penalty kill, and has a poor xGF%. With a cap hit of $2.95 million AAV, a team with a lot of cap space looking for insurance and depth help could target him, but the value is low.
Sundqvist's value is higher for a number of reasons. His cap hit is $1.5 million AAV, he can play center, plays on both special teams, and is more experienced. He will fetch the Blues a draft pick one to two rounds higher than Joseph, but I would doubt it pushes as high as a third round pick or better. It makes a lot of sense for the Blues to trade both players if there is interest as it would get value from pending UFAs and open up spots and opportunities.
