Insider: Oilers & Sabres Becoming Trade Partners

Tristan Jarry injured for Edmonton Oilers

Another goaltending nightmare could be unfolding in Edmonton. And the Oilers might be reaching out to the Buffalo Sabres to solve it.

New Oilers goalie Triston Jarry left Thursday night's game with an injury, and insider Elliotte Friedman reported on Friday's 32 Thoughts podcast that the Oilers have interest in Sabres' netminder Alex Lyon.

And new Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen has already said that the three-goalie experiment is coming to an end in Buffalo. They have Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Lyon and Colten Ellis.

Edmonton did a lot of research on Alex Lyon, I heard last summer they did too... I have great respect for Lyon. He's a guy who has saved how many teams with good 10-15 game stretches. Edmonton has spoken about him, they've done their research on him. They looked into him again this season. They called the Sabres again in recent weeks, I think before Kekalainen was hired.

I wouldn't be surprised if Edmonton makes a call to Buffalo on Friday if they haven't already.

Friedman adds that Buffalo really likes Ellis, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is unlikely to go anywhere either, while the Sabres make another push to get to the playoffs.

Lyon has been solid this season, and has won his last four starts between the pipes for the Sabres. Overall, in 18 games (16 starts), he has a 7-6-3 mark with a .904 save percentage and 2.99 goals against average.

But Kekalainen has said he's definitely ready to move on from the three-goalie system asap.

It really does come down to just how serious the Jarry injury is. As of Friday afternoon, he has been placed on injured reserve and the team has called up Connor Ingram from the AHL.

The NHL's holiday trade freeze comes into effect at 11:59pm Eastern on Friday.
