Maple Leafs fire assistant coach Marc Savard

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been struggling, and general manager Brad Treliving decided to make a move. The team announced on Monday, they've relieved assistant coach Marc Savard of his duties.

Savard joined the team in June 2024, and had been responsible for running the Leafs power play. So far this season, it's ranked dead last in the league. There's been a ton of noise circulating around the team of late, and while many felt it could be head coach Craig Berube losing his job, turns out Savard was the early-season scape goat.

Savard was previously an assistant coach under Berube with the St. Louis Blues in 2019-20, and joined the coaching ranks after a very successful NHL career as a player, who was known as a power-play specialist, and a very gifted offensive minded.

The Leafs power play is running at 13.3% this season, and while Savard gets a lot of the attention, it's the big horses who aren't getting the job done, and appear a bit lost without Mitch Marner on their roster.

Toronto enters Christmas week with a 15-5-5 record, host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, and are very close to having their entire season going off the rails before the half-way mark.
