Despite Last Place, Jets Can Still Buy Certain Player
The Winnipeg Jets' season has gone off the rails as they have won one time in the past 11 games and three times in the past 19 games and sit last in the NHL with 34 points in 38 games. They still have a world-class goalie, strong defensemen, and some very good forwards, but beyond four players who have 30+ points, nobody else has over 15 points.
The Jets aren't in a place where they want to rebuild, but rather change a few things around and finish strong as well as be able to come back next season and be much better like the Presidents' Trophy winning team they were in 2024-25.
According to Elliotte Friedman, "I think if there's someone out there that (Cheveldayoff) likes with term, I could see him doing that, but rentals, I only see it for a very cheap price." He also said, "When you are where you are now, you tend not to do rentals. I don't expect them to go big hunting for rentals unless they know they can sign the guy."
Jonathan Toews is the only forward outside of the top line of the Jets (who are doing very well) that has a good reason why he isn't producing like his prior season, and that's because he took two years off. Nobody else can seem to find anything. Logan Stanley has the fourth-most goals on the team with seven behind the entire top line.
Winnipeg isn't known as a place where many free agents choose as their top destination, and thus it has always been more difficult for them to get high-end free agents and have had to build through the draft or good trades with players who have term. That's once again how they're going to have to turn this season around because nothing internal has worked or been tried very long, and the team has no injuries they're dealing with at the moment.
There's a good chance the Jets start to win more games than they have recently in the near future, but whether it's enough to get them back in the race in the weak West is what we watch to find out. There's room to make changes and that's what needs to happen to shock the team back to life.
