NHL Breaking News: Blackhawks Trade Goalie Laurent Brossoit

His name had been out there on the rumor mill this season even though he hasn't played a game in the NHL for two years. But the Chicago Blackhawks simply don't have room for Laurent Brossoit in their crease, and today they've sent him to the San Jose Sharks in a trade.

It's a nice move to acquire some goaltending insurance for the Sharks, who are currently in a playoff spot.

The Blackhawks acquire defenseman Jake Furlong, a 2028 4th-round pick, and the contract of inactive Ryan Ellis from San Jose in exchange for Brossoit, defenseman Nolan Allan, and a 2028 7th-round pick.

Brossoit hasn't played in the league since signing a two-year, $6.6 million deal with Chicago in the summer of 2024. He's been out recovering first from knee surgery, then hip surgery. But his rehab in the AHL has gone swimmingly, as he was just named the Rockford Ice Hogs Player of the Month. He posted a .901 save percentage with a 3.38 goals against average in six games.

He's been an excellent backup his entire 10-year career in the NHL, with a .911 save percentage across 140 appearances, and a 2.64 GAA. He was the starter for the Vegas Golden Knights when they began their 2023 Stanley Cup Playoff run, but an injury sidelined him eight games into the postseason and he was forced to give way to Adin Hill, who finished off the Cup run for Vegas.

Brossoit, 32, has also played for the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets.

Allan also heads to San Jose; he's a 22-year-old left-shot d-man who was a first-round pick in the 2021 draft. He split last season between the Hawks and the Ice Hogs, but has played exclusively at the AHL level this year.

In addition to giving Brossoit a chance to reclaim a spot on an NHL roster, the main goal for Chicago in this ndeal was to acquire Ellis’ contract. The $6.25 million cap hit will help them reach the cap floor.
