Rangers claim Vincent Iorio off waivers from Sharks
The New York Rangers have added some depth to their blueline as the team announced they've claimed defenceman Vincent Iorio off waivers from the San Jose Sharks.
Iorio was waived by the Sharks on Friday, and now finds a new home on a struggling Rangers roster. GM Chris Drury has been busy working the phones trying to move Artemi Panarin, and there's been rumblings Vincent Trocheck and Alexis Lafreniere are always in play.
Iorio has appeared in 21 games for the Sharks this season, and has chipped in with three assists, while playing over 16 minutes per game. He's also been down to the AHL for some action this season, producing seven assists in a six-game stretch with the AHL's San Jose Barracuda.
Iorio is no stranger to being claimed off waivers, as this is actually the second time this season he's been waived and the claimed, as he was placed on waivers back in October by the Washington Capitals, and eventually claimed by the Sharks.
The Coquitlam, British Columbia native was originally a 2021 second-round pick of the Capitals, and only appeared in nine games over two years with the Caps, registering one assist.
Iorio spent most of his time with Washington's farm team in Hershey, scoring 11 times and adding 45 assists for 56 points in 190 career games.
At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Iorio brings an element of size to the Rangers blueline, which they can desperately use, and considering there's expected to be multiple trades made out of New York after the Olympic break, it could be a great opportunity for Iorio to showcase himself for next season.
