Josh Morrissey's Status Revealed for Gold Medal Game

Winnipeg Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey

While Sidney Crosby's status is still up in the air for the Gold Medal Game on Sunday, the news is more disappointing for Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey. He has been ruled out. His Olympic Games are over. Heck, they barely ever began.

It's heartbreaking news for Morrissey, who also missed the 4 Nations Final a year ago due to an illness.

This time around, the Jets' top-pairing two-way d-man suffered an upper-body injury early in Canada's first game of the Olympics, and played only one period. Though he tried to come back later in that game, he simply couldn't, and hasn't been back since, despite hopes that it would not be a serious injury.

“Josh, in the end, he just wouldn’t be able to perform at what he could," said head coach Jon Cooper.

Morrissey seemed to be at full speed at practice earlier in the week, and it was felt that he would make it back. But it wasn't to be.

“Listen, we want Josh in this game and he helps us," added Cooper. "Puck mover, everything he does.

“(But) In the end, if you’re not physically able to do it — and the one selfless thing about this team and the way I’ve watched these players … when it comes to the flag, nobody’s getting in the way. If they’re not capable of giving what they think is optimal effort, they don’t want to put the country at harm. They understand what we have here."

His timeline to return to the Jets is also unclear.

Morrissey is having another stellar season for Winnipeg, with 10 goals and 42 points in 56 games, with a plus/minus rating of +10.
