Maple Leafs Reject 1-For-1 Trade Proposal From Oilers

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube looks on during 2025 game.

Toronto has been linked to Edmonton plenty this winter, but one proposed one-for-one never got off the ground.

On his latest trade board, Nick Kypreos reported the Edmonton Oilers were “prepared to send” Andrew Mangiapane to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Matias Maccelli, and “the feeling is the Leafs weren’t too interested in it.”

Why Toronto Said No to the Oilers’ One-for-One Offer

Mangiapane’s season hasn’t popped, with seven goals and 14 points in 51 games, and the Oilers have been trying to find him a fit for months.

Oilers had some high hopes for Mangiapane this season when they signed him to a two-year, $7.2M deal ($3.6M AAV). He had a down year in Washington last year, but was still able to bury 14 goals while playing just 13:02 minutes per game.

Prior to that, the 29-year-old had been a very solid player in Calgary, putting up 109 goals and 215 total points across 417 games played and seven seasons, and there were dreams of him excelling beside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the Oilers.

It's just not getting better this year on the Oilers for Mangiapane, unfortunately, as he's now down to just 12:39 time on ice per game, and holds a brutal -19 plus/minus rating. He has never held a negative plus/minus rating in a season before, other than his rookie season in 2017-18, where he played just 10 games.

It's reached a breaking point for him in Edmonton, and it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when' he gets traded in the next week.

Meanwhile, Toronto's in a similar situation with Matias Maccelli. They acquired him from the Utah Mammoth in the offseason for a 2027 third-round pick.

The Maple Leafs have similarly watched Maccelli filter in and out of the lineup this season, and produce 10 goals and 24 points through 46 games.

That being said, he's only 25, and, ignoring last season, there are some intriguing numbers to look back on recently. From 2022-24, Maccelli recorded 28 goals and 106 total points across 146 games played with the Arizona Coyotes.

In their first season in Utah, however, he lost the coaching staff's faith and really struggled to find his way into the lineup, very similar to this season, recording just eight goals and 18 points over 55 games.

If the Leafs are moving him, one would imagine they would hope he could get hot in this last stretch before the deadline, and they could ship him out for a better return than he would fetch right now. The Oilers are hoping for the same thing from Mangiapane.

Maccelli is a restricted free agent after this season.
