Maple Leafs Goalie Logjam Could Provide Surprise At Trade Deadline
And while pending UFAs are definitely on the table, and many of them surely to be moved, another area of the team that GM Brad Treliving could (should?) deal from is in goal. The team has three legit NHL goaltenders. One of them could bring back some nice assets for a team desperately in need of re-stocking the cupboard.
Anthony Stolarz led the NHL in save percentage in 2023-24 and '24-'25. Joseph Woll has proven to be a solid No. 1 at times, and 24-year-old Dennis Hildeby was spectacular in his 19-game stint with the team earlier this season, posting a .910 save percentage.
It has been surmised by followers of the team that Stolarz would be the one that the Leafs would put on the trade block if they were looking to use that depth in that way.
But according to James Murphy of rg.org, his sources tell him that Joseph Woll might be the one to go.
League sources suggest Joseph Woll may be the more realistic trade chip. With three NHL-caliber goalies under contract and term commitments already on the books, Toronto may use the crease logjam to reshape assets before the deadline.
“I know everyone is talking about Stolarz being dealt, but my eye is on Woll,”
Murphy was told. In fact, this source went on to tell him that he feels Woll will be "gone by the deadline."
The 27-year-old is in the first season of a three-year deal that pays him a resonable $3.6M AAV. He has some remarkable stats this season for a team that has otherwise struggled mightily defensively: a 13-8-4 mark with a 2.92 GAA and .910 save percentage.
Stolarz, on the other hand, hasn't even begun his four-year extension yet. It kicks in next year at a $3.75M cap hit, and he's languishing this season on an .882 Sv% and 3.60 GAA. He would be much harder to deal, plus it would be selling low on him—very low.
