12 Right-D Blueliners Named As Potential Senators Trade Targets
The Ottawa Senators tried their darndest to land a right-shot defenseman at the trade deadline, per Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen. He writes that GM Steve Staios kicked the tires on "virtually every right-shot defenseman that was on the market before the NHL's trade deadline on March 6th."
Many of them didn't get moved, so come this summer, a lot of those same names could still be available, and talks will continue. Throw in a slew of other pending UFAs that weren't really on the block, and we've got a catalogue of 12 blueliners who are either right-shot or can play the right side, that could be on the Senators' shopping list come July 1st.
Regardless of whether or not the Sens make the playoffs over the next few weeks, they will need to address the right side of the D-corps. 35-year-old Nick Jensen is a UFA and will not be back next season.
Let's start with the big names they targeted at the deadline:
- Colton Parayko (declined trade to Buffalo Sabres, still potentially available)
- Rasmus Ristolainen (Flyers held onto him, but could revisit in summer)
- Simon Nemec (Devils did not trade him, could still be available)
- Dougie Hamilton (Devils didn't move him, but definitely want to ship out his $9 million cap hit)
- MacKenzie Weegar (traded to Utah Mammoth, no longer available, on long-term deal)
- Justin Faulk (traded to Detroit Red Wings, one year to run, no longer avail.)
Then Garrioch listed another group of pending UFAs that could be considered as well:
- Rasmus Andersson (traded to Vegas in January, but expected to sign extension after the season)
- Darren Raddysh
- John Carlson
- Jacob Trouba
- Brent Burns
- John Klingberg
- Radko Gudas
- Jamie Oleksiak (LD, but can play right side)
- Logan Stanley (LD, but can play right side)
All in all, a dozen names to consider for Staios. Garrioch notes that a few of those names are "not exciting", and the Sens will not likely have any interest.
