6 Goalies Available For the Right Price At Trade Deadline
While defensemen and centers have been front and, uh, center so far during trade deadline week, don't overlook the possibility of a notable goalie trade.
There are a few contending teams who could stand to get an upgrade between the pipes, even if just for a backup. You never know what can happen in the playoffs.
Let's go through this list compiled by Jesse Granger of The Athletic of six notable goaltenders who could be had for the right price.
- Sergei Bobrovsky
- Jordan Binnington
- Jesper Wallstedt
- Elvis Merzlikins
- Stuart Skinner
- Devin Cooley
Both 'Playoff Bob' and 'Big Game Binner' are goalies that come up big when the stakes are highest (as their nicknames would suggest). Bobrovsky has two Stanley Cups and Binnington has one, plus the otherworldly clutch performance he came up with to help lead Canada to the 4 Nations title last year.
For Bob, he's a pending UFA, and he and the Panthers aren't on the same page yet on extension conversations. And for Binnington, the Blues are in a tear-down, and he could be one of the big names heading out the door. They'll both be costly to land.
Wallstedt will come at a very heavy price, as the Minnesota Wild are in win-now mode this season, going for it all. If anything should happen to No. 1 man Filip Gustavsson come playoff-time, the 23-year-old Wallstedt, having a sensational rookie season, would see to it that they barely miss a beat. Earlier this season, he became the first rookie goalie since 1938 to record four shutouts in a six-game span.
Merzlikins has ceded his starter's role to Jet Greaves this season in Columbus, so with one year remaining on a $5.4 million AAV, the Blue Jackets are likely willing to move him. He does have a career .900 save percentage. As Granger writes, "this is the type of gamble that would have made sense for the Oilers, rather than swapping Stuart Skinner for another similarly styled, high-floor goalie in Tristan Jarry."
And speaking of Skinner, he's had a nice showing in Pittsburgh since that trade, however, as a pending UFA, and with Arturs Silovs around and a hot prospect in Sergei Murashov seemingly ready, the Pens should get something for Skinner now.
As a backup in Calgary, Cooley has come out of nowhere to post a league-best .923 save percentage.
