Are Oilers Ready To Jump Back Into Goalie Market?

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Tristan Jarry during a stoppage in play

The Edmonton Oilers are back to their old ways coming out of the Olympic break. One impressive win sandwiched by two dreadful efforts on the defensive side of the puck. The goaltending is once again coming under fire. Now, where have we heard that before?

The Stuart Skinner for Tristan Jarry trade has been an abject failure, as Jarry has posted an .864 save percentage in 12 appearances with the Oilers with a 3.85 goals-against average. Skinner, meanwhile, has had a fairly nice run with the Pittsburgh Penguins, posting an .890 Sv% and 2.66 GAA in 14 games.

Are the Oilers ready to jump back into the goalie market already? TSN hockey analyst (and former NHLer) Cameron Guance has proposed two notable options they could—and should—pursue at the deadline:

They need to remedy the situation, and they need to do it fast. Two names I'd like to look at: Jordan Binnington. He's got the nickname Big Game Binner for a reason... And the Oilers will be playing in some very big games...

The other one, for me: Sergei Bobrovsky. Yes, he's beaten them two straight times in the Cup finals, he's got two Vezinas, and he's a great option.

Bobrovsky's name has been floated this past week as a possible trade candidate out of Florida. The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers are eight points back of a playoff spot. The legendary goaltender is a pending UFA. There is nothing doing on the extension front. "So why not take the chance the rest of this season, go with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and go for three Cups in a row?" Guance urged Bobrovsky.

But, insider Elliotte Friedman, speaking on the NHL on TNT on Sunday, has quashed the talk of the Oilers looking to make another change between the pipes.

I looked into that yesterday, 'Were the Oilers in the goalie market?', and I heard from a couple of places that the answer is No — they've made their bed in net and they're going to live with that.

He added that what Edmonton is focused on at this blueline is finding a right-side defenseman, and one or two names stand out for them, and a third-line center.

So unless things change—and in this league, all it takes, as we know, is one phone call—the Oilers are riding with Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram.
