Breaking: Oilers Place Andrew Mangiapane on Waivers

Edmonton Oilers forward Andrew Mangiapane

The Edmonton Oilers have been having plenty of trouble finding a trade partner to take Andrew Mangiapane's $3.6 million cap hit (this year and next) off their hands. They've now placed him on waivers.

Alec Regula also hits the waiver wire.

The moves are to hopefully create cap and roster flexibility as we head towards the trade deadline on Friday. Once Mangiapane clears waivers (and he likely will, with that salary owed), they can send him to Bakersfield in the AHL and save $1.15 million of cap room. The Oilers currently have zero cap room, so they're desperate to create space. If they get lucky and another team actually claims him off waivers, they'll save $3.6 million of cap space, in a real windfall.

Mangiapane has played 52 games with the Oilers this season after signing a two-year, $7.2 million free agent deal last summer. He has just 14 points in a very disappointing season, with a career-worst minus-19 rating.

It's possible that Regula gets claimed, but the Oilers are hoping to sneak him through and send his contract to Bakersfield as well.

Another possibility they could look at this coming week is placing Mattias Janmark on LTIR, which would save another $1.45 million.
