Islanders & Canucks in Serious Discussions For Trade

One team that many of us may be sleeping on as we approach Friday's deadline is the New York Islanders. There haven't been a lot of rumors about who they might be chasing. But we do know that GM Mathieu Darche wants to reward his team for the unexpected playoff-bound season they're having.

According to Vancouver Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal, we should all be keeping an eye on the Islanders. He says that Conor Garland is on their radar.

"Something's going on between the Islanders and Canucks," said Dhaliwal.

"The Canucks are following the Islanders around with their pro scouts."

Islanders beat writer Stefan Rosner has heard the same thing.

“There are serious discussions happening between Isles & Canucks. Been told it's surrounding Garland. But was also told that it could be Garland +. We'll see how this plays out."

Garland, 29, has no trade protection at the moment. As of July 1st, that changes to a full no-move clause. Another reason the Canucks could look to move on this asap.

Irfaan Gaffar notes that the Isles might have the assets to get a deal done for Garland. They have two first-round picks in this year's draft. And he feels 'a first' is something the Canucks would want in return.

Garland signed a six-year extension last summer ($6 million AAV) that doesn't even kick in until next season.
