Mammoth Acquiring Mackenzie Weegar From Flames
The Utah Mammoth have swung a massive trade.
According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, Utah and the Calgary Flames have finalized a trade that sends veteran defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to the Mammoth.
In return, the Flames are acquiring Olli Maatta, Jonathan Castagna, and three 2026 second round picks.
Castagena was a third-round pick (70th overall) in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, and has recorded 32 points in 29 games with NCAA Cornell this season.
Maatta has two more years remaining on his contract, after this season, carrying an AAV of $3.5M.

Friedman reported that the Mammoth and Flames were “closing in” on the deal earlier as both sides waited to see if Weegar would waive his no-trade protection to complete the move.

The 32-year-old defenseman is under contract through the 2029-30 season with a $6.25 million cap hit after signing an eight-year, $50 million extension with Calgary in 2022.
Utah had been searching for help on the blue line, and adding a right-shot defender capable of playing heavy minutes addresses a huge need for the franchise as it pushes toward playoff contention.
Flames ready to move MacKenzie Weegar as rebuild continues
Weegar has been a cornerstone for the Flames since arriving in the Matthew Tkachuk blockbuster trade with the Florida Panthers, producing 35 goals and 151 points across four seasons in Calgary while piling up more than 600 blocked shots and over 700 hits.
Though he’s endured a difficult 2025-26 season with three goals and 21 points through 60 games, his long-term contract and reputation as a minute-eating defender have kept him in high demand around the league.
