NHL Rumors: Panthers Working On Extensions for Two Players

Florida Panthers Sergei Bobrovsky and AJ Greer celebrate after 2025 game.

The Florida Panthers did not make the splash many expected at the trade deadline entering the season.

Instead of moving pending unrestricted free agents, Florida kept both Sergei Bobrovsky and A.J. Greer, with TSN's Pierre LeBrun indicating the club is now working on extensions for both players.

Panthers general manager Bill Zito made the team’s stance clear after the deadline, calling Bobrovsky “part of our franchise” and “part of our core,” while saying Florida wants to keep him.

Sergei Bobrovsky remains central to Florida’s plans

Bobrovsky was one of the biggest Florida names tied to deadline chatter, yet the Panthers never let the situation get to the point of a real breakup.

Florida’s focus after the deadline reportedly shifted toward trying to sign the veteran goalie, not replacing him. Even in a statistically rougher regular season, Bobrovsky’s body of work still carries enormous weight.

He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion in Florida, has helped backstop the Panthers to three straight Stanley Cup Final appearances, and entered Friday with 451 career wins, eighth on the NHL’s all-time list.

The strain of back-to-back Stanley Cup wins appears to have taken it's toll on the 37-year-old this season, however, as he's posted an ugly .878 save percentage and a 3.03 GAA over 45 games this year.

Bill Zito also pushed back on the idea of decline, saying he wants Bobrovsky back, while Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk called him the team’s backbone and one of the biggest reasons for the franchise’s two recent Cups.

A.J. Greer earned more than trade interest from Panthers

Greer’s case says plenty about how Florida views its supporting cast. He drew real interest before the deadline, but the Panthers held onto him and are now expected to explore an extension once things settle.

Greer is in the middle of a career year with 11 goals and 22 points in 62 games, and over the last two seasons with Florida he has produced 17 goals, 39 points, and 381 hits in 142 games. The physical edge has always been there, but this season he has shown he can handle bigger minutes and more responsibility beyond a traditional fourth-line role.

Greer said this week he was relieved the Panthers believe in him, adding, “I’m proud to wear this jersey.”

Florida’s quiet deadline is starting to make more sense now. Rather than cash out on two useful veterans, the Panthers appear to be trying to preserve continuity around a championship core.
