NHL Rumors: Why Red Wings Walked Away from a Major Deadline Upgrade

Detroit Red Wings players celebrate goal during 2026 game.

The Detroit Red Wings were in the market for help at the trade deadline, but there was one line they did not want to cross.

According to Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff, Detroit was not willing to move any of its top prospects in deadline talks, even while looking for a major upgrade down the middle.

The Red Wings and Steve Yzerman wanted to improve, but not at the cost of names like Nate Danielson, or either of their two blue-chip goalie prospects in Sebastian Cossa or Trey Augustine.

Red Wings protected top prospects at the trade deadline

Di Marco reported that one executive who spoke with Detroit came away with the sense that the Red Wings would not include Danielson or prized goalie prospects Cossa and Augustine in any serious trade package.

That became especially notable with Vincent Trocheck and Robert Thomas sitting out there as one of the biggest names connected to the deadline rumor mill. The price on Thomas was sky-high, reportedly something close to four first-round picks in value, so this was never going to be a light lift.

But if there was a team that could have justified getting uncomfortable, it was probably Detroit. Thomas is 26, already proven, and exactly the type of long-term top-six center this roster still doesn't have behind Dylan Larkin.

Unfortunately, since the deadline, Larkin and Andrew Copp have both dealt with injuries, the club has spent another spring trying to hang onto a playoff spot, and the margin for error in the Eastern Conference is increasingly thin.

With 12 games left, the Red Wings are currently one point out of a wild-card spot.

Danielson may become that answer one day, and Cossa still looks like a huge part of the future in goal, but the Red Wings are closing in on a full decade without playoff hockey.

Steve Yzerman’s patience could define Detroit’s season

To be fair, Yzerman didn't do nothing.

Detroit added Justin Faulk at the deadline, and that gave the blue line another veteran piece for the stretch run. But it's hard not to look at the bigger picture and wonder if the Red Wings played this too safe again.

When your captain is approaching 30, Alex DeBrincat is getting older, and Patrick Kane is on his last legs, there is a fair argument that the time to cash in some futures is right now.

We even saw Larkin sound off on how he was upset with the lack of moves Yzerman made last year to help their team.

If Detroit misses the playoffs again, we very well might see the same reaction from players and fans, but likely even more amplified.
