Two Top Young Canadiens Players Blues Are Eyeing in a Robert Thomas Trade

The Montreal Canadiens seem to be the team most often cited in rumors surrounding St. Louis Blues' star center Robert Thomas.

But as insider Pierre LeBrun said on TSN today, "I was told as of last night, the price is still astronomical... As it should be! 26-year-old No. 1 centers on a decent contract don't come around very often. I think St. Louis is well within its rights to ask for the moon for Robert Thomas."

It's being said that Blues GM Doug Armstrong is asking for the equivalent of four first-round assets.

What would Montreal have to give up for Robert Thomas?

If the Habs are to really pursue this, what type of return would they have to send the Blues?

Marco D'Amico writes in rg.org that there are a couple of primo young names that they're interested in.

The Blues reportedly covet Michael Hage a great deal and have shown a interest in Kaiden Guhle, as well as other young blueliners in previous discussions between the clubs.

Those names being on the Blues' wish list has been a major hold-up in the talks, sources tell D'Amico. "Losing a fan favourite and exciting prospect like Hage could be too rich a proposition," he writes.

Hage was the Habs' first round pick (24th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft. He has 45 points in 34 games this season at University of Michigan with a plus/minus rating of +12.

Guhle is another former first-round pick, a 24-year-old, physical 6'3" defenseman who plays in the top-four. He's in the first season of a six-year deal with a $5.5M AAV. Montreal wouldn't be too keen on parting with him, either.

Meanwhile, the Blues continue scout the Canadiens heavily this season, but Habs GM Kent Hughes is hoping the price drops by the deadline—or perhaps, in the summer.

But other teams are lurking as well for Thomas... He might not get to the summer as a trade candidate.
