Report: 11-Year Veteran Sonny Milano Making Significant Move for 2026-27

Washington Capitals forward Sonny Milano

After his second consecutive troubling injury-riddled season with the Washington Capitals, eleven-year NHL veteran Sonny Milano is reportedly making a significant move for the 2026-27 season.

According to a report out of Switzerland, pending unrestricted free agent Milano is signing with SC Bern for next year. Klaus Zaugg of Watson.ch says a deal is already done, and writes that the flashy Milano is "clearly the perfect, feisty butterfly for our running and speed league." He continues:

"If Sonny Milano is 100% fit, he will be one of SC Bern's best foreign players since their promotion (1986)."

He missed nearly the entire 2024-25 season with a serious upper-body injury suffered early in the campaign. This year, he experienced another difficult campaign, a victime of frequent healthy scratches in Washington, then being put on waivers, going unclaimed, and being sent down to the Hershey Bears of the AHL in late February. It was his first trip to the minors in three years.

The 29-year-old finished his NHL season with eight points in 31 games. It was only a couple of years ago that Milano completed a three-year run with the Caps as a double-digit scorer in the bottom six, averaging over 13 goals a year from 2021 to '24.

But a string of injuries slowed him down throughout his career.

In 344 NHL games over 11 years, Milano has recorded 66 goals and 145 points, in an average of 12:38 ice time a night.

He is finishing up a three-year contract with the Capitals with a $1.9 million AAV.
