NHL Rumors: 3 Offseason Trade Destinations for Flames' Olli Maatta

Olli Maatta, Calgary Flames

At the 2026 NHL trade deadline, the Calgary Flames acquired Olli Maatta as part of the deal that sent blueliner MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth. While Maatta was primarily dealt to the Flames for salary purposes, he made a big impact for Calgary following the move. In 21 games for the Flames after the trade this campaign, he had two goals and 14 points.

With Maatta having such a strong finish to the season, it is fair to wonder if the Flames could look to move the veteran defenseman while his trade value is higher. Due to this, let's look at three teams that could target Maatta this summer.

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks need to add to their defensive depth this offseason, and a veteran like Maatta could grab their attention because of it. If they acquired him, he would fit nicely on their bottom pairing and would give them another clear option for their penalty kill. He also could be a good mentor for the Sharks' younger players.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Could a reunion between Maatta and the Penguins be in the cards? The 31-year-old defenseman had a strong six-year tenure with the Penguins, where he won the Stanley Cup twice. With the Penguins needing more help on the left side of their blueline, perhaps bringing back Maatta could be something that they consider.

Ottawa Senators

The Senators could also be a team to keep an eye on when it comes to Maatta. It is no secret that the Senators need to improve their defensive depth, and bringing in Maatta would help them do just that. This is especially so when noting that he is capable of playing both sides.
