Jim Rutherford Reveals Brutally Honest Details Behind Quinn Hughes Leaving
Vancouver Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford has always been completely honest with the media, sometimes to a fault. When he said after last season that Quinn Hughes might want to leave one day and go play with his brothers, it set off a whirlwind of chaos around the team, leading up to the inevitable trade to Minnesota midway through this season.
Now, in his open and transparent meeting with the media Friday afternoon, Rutherford is offering up even more 'hard truths' about why Hughes was dealt.
Jim Rutherford delivers an incredibly hard truth:

"Some people think Quinn left here because the team wasn't good, and I think he was leaving anyway. And the best example I can give you is Matthew Tkachuk.
He was in Calgary, they had a good team, and he left anyway." #Canucks

"He wanted to go back to the U.S.," Rutherford admitted. "I'm close to (Hughes), I really like him, and I respect what he did in Vancouver. Guys work toward free agency, and we should respect the fact that he had that option and that he was going to exercise that option."
Canucks handed out a slew of big extensions as a last-ditch effort to get Hughes to stay
The Canucks POHO then made a stunning admission that he handed out a bunch of extensions last year with the hopes of convincing Hughes to stay, to no avail.
"I'd known for some time that (Quinn) Hughes was not staying... I knew before the season for that matter.

It's one of the reasons we signed the Garlands, the Boesers and the Demkos... hoping for a bit of a chance right to the end that he might decide to stay." - JR #Canucks
"I'd known for some time that Hughes was not staying... I knew before the season for that matter. It's one of the reasons we signed the (Connor) Garlands, the (Brock) Boesers and the (Thatcher) Demkos... hoping for a bit of a chance right to the end that he might decide to stay... But I don’t think that was ever in the cards.”
Yikes.
There are already some heads exploding on social media about this revelation.
Unbelievable he just admitted they gave out all those idiotic contracts as a Hail Mary for Quinn..incompetence

This press conference has been an absolute disaster. Jesus christ Jim stop talking. We signed Brock garland and demko in the hope Quinn would change his mind.... even though you knew he didn't want to stay.. good God

Sometimes, for Jim Rutherford, maybe honesty isn't the best policy.
