Maple Leafs named NHL's most disappointing team of 2025-26
The Toronto Maple Leafs are a dysfunctional mess, and everyone around the NHL knows it.
The Leafs went from giving the Florida Panthers their biggest test during their Stanley Cup championship run, to a dismal offseason which saw Mitch Marner head for Vegas, to a regular season loaded with unmet expectations.
There's been plenty of chatter recently about how CEO Keith Pelley was trying to influence Brad Treliving with AI-created trade proposals, and now head coach Craig Berube is on thin ice as the team continues to interview GM candidates. On Wednesday, Colby Cohen of Daily Faceoff commented on the shenanigans in Toronto, naming the Maple Leafs the most disappointing team in the league this season, and rightfully so:
Colby Cohen: The level of disappointment towards the Toronto Maple Leafs, it just couldn’t be higher. I’m a big fan of Craig Berube. I think he’s a great guy, he’s a great motivator, and I think when he can’t get the group going, especially early on, I think it’s more the group than it is him, to be honest. So, I look at the talent that they have, I know that they screwed up their roster, and I think that they messed with not having a real replacement for Mitch Marner. I think everybody overlooked how big of a deal that would be, to not have all those points and all those minutes in your lineup at a high level. I think Toronto sits alone at the top of the throne for disappointments for me. I like when Toronto is good, I’ll be honest, so I’m personally disappointed.
The offseason of major changes will begin soon in Toronto, as Leafs Nation is holding out a glimmer of hope they'll be able to move up and select in the top spot of the NHL Draft.
