Report: Patrick Kane to Re-Sign With Detroit Red Wings

Showtime doesn't want to play anywhere but HockeyTown.

Patrick Kane spoke to the media following the Detroit Red Wings' disappointing season, and reiterated the fact he's interested in re-signing with the team. The future hall-of-famer is a pending unrestricted free agent, and while there's going to be a wealth of interest from other teams, sounds like Kane prefers sticking around Motown.

“I think there is mutual interest for me to come back and continue my career here,” the 37-year-old forward said during the Red Wings' season-ending media availabilities Friday. "It’s been a great spot for me, my family and my son, and I’ve definitely enjoyed my time here. But there’s no rush -- I’ll talk things over with my agent and my family, and we’ll see how everything plays out.

“I’d love to be part of the solution that gets this team over the hump. We have a good team here, and we can win. I think this team is better than some teams that are in the playoffs.”

The Red Wings finished the year 41-31-10, missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as the heat has certainly been cranked way up on GM Steve Yzerman. There's a ton of pressure to get the Red Wings back to contenders, and so far, the Yzerplan has not been working. Kane knows this group can turn it around. “I thought we would still be playing now,” Kane said. “I think everyone in the locker room is somewhat embarrassed right now, because we know there were some games we just gave away. We all need to look in the mirror and figure out how to be more competitive next year"

The 37-year-old Kane was signed for $3 million AAV with performance bonuses, and will surely be looking for a similar contract for next season. If the Red Wings don't lock him up before July 1, expect to see the Toronto Maple Leafs make a run at Kane to play with Auston Matthews.
