What Do The Buffalo Sabres Have In Store For Pending UFA Alex Tuch?
Alex Tuch has been a key player in the Buffalo Sabres lineup. They found themselves in a playoff spot this season, with his contributions pushing the needle along the way.
Tuch, this season, has scored 30 goals and 62 points in 75 games under head coach Lindy Ruff. Tuch, a fixture on the Sabres' top-six, has been one of the team's most consistent forwards since he arrived in trade in 2021-22.
His seven-year, $4.75 million average annual value contract ends at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season. Seeing as he wasn't traded during the March deadline, it appears that newly-minted general manager Jamo Kekalainen has plans beyond this season for the 30-goal scorer.
Daily Faceoff's Mike Gould offers a sobering perspective of what could turn into a complicated situation, depending on whether or not Tuch decides to go to market.
The team doesn't have the cap space at the moment to shoulder a raise for Tuch, who could look for a comparable contract to Nick Schmaltz's $8 million AAV.
With only $925K in space at the moment, GM Kekalainen will have to move with precision and will need Tuch to play lights-out hockey in the playoffs to justify a raise.
Buffalo will surely point to Nick Schmaltz’s new eight-year, $8 million-AAV contract with the Utah Mammoth as a top comparable for Tuch, but he could probably command eight figures on the open market," Gould writes. "Again, it’s not as though the Sabres can’t afford that, but we’ve seen so many teams come to regret signing power forwards deep into their 30s at big money. It’s a tough one, but Tuch has the power to make himself seem truly indispensable to new Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen with a dominant playoff showing.
What Are The Next Steps For The Buffalo Sabres And Tuch?
It's difficult to discern a player's true motivations, given how often many are tight-lipped, especially when it comes to playoff hockey. With Tuch making an appearance with the Sabres, there could be a reason to stick around with his hometown team after dedicating a significant amount of his career there already.
But, as an unrestricted free agent, if he does well and the Sabres get knocked out early, he could pick and choose where he lands next.
Multiple teams, including the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, and Los Angeles Kings, were speculated to be interested in the superstar. Now we'll have to wait until July to see what happens next with Tuch.
