3 Free-Agent Destinations for Evgeni Malkin

Evgeni Malkin's future as a Pittsburgh Penguin is awfully bleak.

The future hall-of-famer was noticeably distraught after the Penguins were eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Philadelphia Flyers. After not being an offered a contract extension at all since July 1st, Malkin knows this could be it for him, even though the likes of Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust have essentially begged publicly for Kyle Dubas to re-sign the Russian forward.

Malkin's very likely hitting the free-agent market, and he has admitted he wants to play in the NHL next season. It looks like his life as a Penguin is over, and here's three teams to keep an eye on come July 1.

Washington Capitals

The Capitals have been rivals of the Penguins for years, but if Pittsburgh does turn their back on Malkin, don't be surprised to see him sign with their closest rival. Malkin's revenge year playing alongside close buddy Alex Ovechkin would be absolutely cinema, and frankly, many are pulling for this to happen. Ovechkin appears to be coming back for another year, now we wait to see what happens with Malkin.

Florida Panthers

The Panthers have been a team that Malkin admires, and they'll be looking to add another center this summer. Malkin spends a lot of time in Florida during the offseason, and is close with Sergei Bobrovsky, and could be linking up with Goalie Bob next season. The Panthers have been linked to Malkin in the past, don't be surprised to see them make an offer in July.

Minnesota Wild

Regardless on how the Wild do throughout the playoffs, they'll be looking for another forward next summer, as Bill Guerin will continue to be aggressive after landing Quinn Hughes this season. Guerin and Malkin are extremely close from their time together in Pittsburgh, and there's 100% mutual interest. Keep an eye on the Wild, after the Caps, they are 100% the second favorite.
