Sabres' Trade Target Devon Levi Linked To Atlantic Division Rival

Buffalo Sabres goalie Devon Levi

Buffalo Sabres goaltending prospect Devon Levi didn't get a shot at the NHL level this season, but the 24-year-old is still considered a strong prospect between the pipes.

The Sabres have a crowded crease at the moment, with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Alex Lyon and Colten Ellis also among the crew. We've already heard rumors about Levi as a trade candidate this summer, and likely being on the move.

Insider Kevin Weekes, a former NHL goalie himself, knows of what he speaks, and he told NHL Network that Levi has some suitors.

He's drawing a lot of interest, which I know for a fact he is. I think there is some unlimited upside for him. He's proven to be a really good prospect. Could a team like Ottawa... be a really good fit for him? Yes. He's from the Montreal area (not far from Ottawa)... I would anticipate they'd try to move him.

We know that the Senators are definitely looking to bring in some help for Linus Ullmark, who had a difficult year this past season in Ottawa. Ullmark can still be a No. 1, but maybe they'd look at Levi as a solid backup, and someone who could build into a full-time starter as Ullmark continues to age into his mid-30s. The veteran still has three years to run on his contract, with an $8.25M AAV. Levi, with one year still to run at $812,000, would help keep the cap hit at the position at a reasonable number.

But if Ottawa is interested, they will have competition in trying to swing a deal for Levi, as Weekes indicated. We noted recently a couple of other teams to keep an eye on as well.

Levi had a terrific college hockey career at Northeastern and was a two-time winner of the Mike Richter Award as the top goalie in the NCAA.

In 36 games started with Buffalo split over the previous three years, Levi has an .894 save percentage. This season, he posted a .904 save percentage at Rochester in the AHL, with a 2.83 goals against average. He has regularly stepped it up in the playoffs with Rochester, posting a Sv% of .919 this season, and as high as .923 two years back.
