3 Free-Agent Destinations for David Perron

Social Media Feature Preview

David Perron isn't expected to re-sign with the Detroit Red Wings this summer. General manager Steve Yzerman has been busy working the phones facilitating a Dylan Larkin trade, and given Perron's production after joining the Red Wings last season, it's best for both sides to go in different directions. The 38-year-old Perron is a gamer, and he knows exactly what his role on any team is. Perron's a glue guy, he's extremely hard working and he loves to piss off his opponents. There's going to be a market for him come July 1, and several contending teams will be interested in having Perron in their bottom six.

Perron split last season between the Red Wings and Ottawa Senators, appearing in 65 games, scoring 13 goals and 28 points. He's perfectly suited as a depth penalty killer, and someone who can bang-and-crash on a shutdown third line, and move up if there's any injuries.

Here's three teams to keep an eye on to sign Perron:

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs are in the market for bottom six wingers and need a righty shot for their third line and second power play unit. Perron knows the Leafs well from his days in Ottawa, and knows what to expect in the market. This could be a great fit for both sides.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning need depth up front and don't have loads of cap space, so they'll be bargain shopping and Perron could very well make the list. The Bolts have a shot to win every season and at Perron's age, he's only considering winning cultures and a shot at the Cup.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers are making changes to their roster this summer, and it will be interesting to see what the free-agent landscape looks like once Mike Babcock is hired next week. The Oilers are going to lose out on a lot of players because they want no part playing for Babcock, we'll have to wait and see if Perron is one of them. Edmonton could use him as they're expected to see Jack Roslovic and Adam Henrique move on this summer.
