4 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for Sergei Bobrovsky
Sergei Bobrovsky is seeking a five-to-six year deal, and around $7 million AAV, and as it stands right now, there's a very good chance the Florida Panthers walk away. 'Goalie Bob' has been a staple for the organization as they've turned a corner into a champion, but general manager Bill Zito isn't comfortable giving Bobrovsky a contract longer than three years, considering he's 37 years old.Last season the Russian goaltender's numbers dropped considerably, and he was one of the many reasons the Panthers weren't able to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Yes, they tanked in a major way once things got out of hand, but it was clear from early on last season that Bobrovsky's game had taken a step back. He posted a 27-23-1 record, along with a 3.07 goals against average, and a .877 save percentage, a career worst.
As far as potential free-agent destinations go, here's four teams to keep an eye on:
Winnipeg Jets: Connor Hellebuyck has asked out and there's been a lot of speculation brewing that the Jets are going to move the veteran goaltender for a top-10 draft pick. If/when Hellebuyck is dealt, if the timing aligns, don't be surprised to see Kevin Cheveldayoff make an offer. For Bobrovsky, he'll have to decide if he wants to go from Florida, to Winnipeg, and for six more years.
New Jersey Devils: The Devils are shopping Jacob Markstrom and have been in contact with the Jets. GM Sunny Mehta is a huge fan of Hellebuyck's game, and he's looking to put his fingerprints all over the roster. If this trade materializes, expect to see Markstrom, Simon Nemec, and Dawson Mercer head to Winnipeg.
Carolina Hurricanes: The 'Canes are going to look to run it back next season and the only given at this point is that Brandon Bussi will be a part of their crease. Frederik Andersen may go out on top, and Eric Tulsky is looking to use the rest of their goalie depth to address needs at other spots on their team via trades. Bobrovsky and Bussi could be Carolina's tandem next season.
Edmonton Oilers: Will the Oilers turn to the goalie who they haven't been able to solve in two Stanley Cup Finals? With Tristan Jarry not reaching expectations last season, and with Connor Ingram likely headed for Ottawa, Bobrovsky could very well be a target for GM Stan Bowman. It will be curious to see how the Oilers' cap space is used this summer, as there's also Darnell Nurse, who is on his way out, which could free up a bunch of cap space.
